Pickup and go

Many cars and trucks are rattling into town these days, after completing the Dempster Highway in 24-hour sunlight.

(In this case, I think the white paint will soon read “Done the Dempster.”)

Note: You can actually drive here from Toronto in two weeks. You go through Whitehorse and Dawson City and it’s all gravel roads and beautiful scenery.

The Finto: Finito?

Here’s the Finto hotel and former lounge, now abandoned and probably haunted by spirits.

Will it ever be used again?

Sea change

Amazing to think: This was an ice road.

Walking with the wolfman

Kids on a recent activity parade in Inuvik, just having fun. The banner reads “SAMS (Sir Alexandre Mackenzie School) get active.”

24 sunlight + southern windows…it’s getting hot in here.

You know when you cook a piece of fish, and you wrap it in tin foil? So the heat is trapped inside and the fish cooks evenly?

This is my apartment right now. If I turn over in my sleep it qualifies as a rotisserie oven.

The plywood tank boat

Inuvik has many strange and clever inventions. (Perhaps due to lack of materials.)

This open-hulled boat was turned into a camper thanks to some plywood planks.

Muktuk BBQ on Inuvialuit Day

June 5 was Inuvialuit Day, which celebrates the Inuit of the west.

Traditional foods were served at the Inuvialuit Corporate Centre, which is the nicest building in Inuvik.

Note: What you’re seeing in the cup is Muktuk, or raw beluga whale.

Gambling in Inuvik

Soy milk is usually $11.99 for 2 litres. But today it suddenly went on sale to 99 cents.

(Secret: The expiration date was five days ago.)

Eeew! Throw it back!

This fish is variety of Sculpin, which is sometimes caught in the region. The ones here are slightly darker, but it should give you an idea.

(This picture lifted from Wikipedia, thank goodness.)

It’s Adirondack chair season

My friend Margie happened to visit this week from Ottawa! She is shown with a faux-fur hood, enjoying 24-hour sunlight. (This photo taken sometime after 11pm)

Majestic kitsch

Living in 24-hour sunlight is not easy. The only option is to block it out. (Shown here: a $9.99 window-covering piece of flannel from North Mart. They also carry some with Tupac.)

Joking on the steps of Angik school

Students eating ice cream in Paulatuk, May 26. (And maybe having a bite of the foam container, for comedic effect.)

Youth Centre, late at night….

The Inuvik Youth Centre after hours.

Telephone service in Paulatuk

Signals have to bounce off satellites to reach isolated communities. Sometimes when you call Ulukhaktok or Paulatuk, there is a strange “echo effect.”

Kids in Inuvik

The primary school took its students on a walkabout last week. A good time to enjoy some sunshine and fresh air!

Those yellow mats are soft, but falling on them stll hurts

Just another picture from Inuvik’s wrestling workshop.

Paulatuk’s big celebration

Last weekend in Paulatuk, three students earned a high school degree. Nearly the entire community came to celebrate, and had a feast which included caribou and goose.
