Why build a bridge when the Mackenzie river is frozen six months a year? During the summer months, people can use the Louis Cardinal Ferry, which is free.
It takes people across to Tsiigehthic.

Because, for 3 months of the year the ice is to thin to drive on, but to thick for the ferry to cross through, those months suck! A bridge would be oh so nice, although riding the ferry is fun!
Bridges are pretty darn expensive, but it’s not exactly free to run the ferries and maintain the ice bridge, either.
I’d like to see a comparison of the costs: construction and maintenance of a new bridge versus operation of the ferry and construction and maintenance of the ice bridge.
