Hey guys, what’s happening on this side?

b-dgog-saying-hello.jpg

A curious dog from the Arctic Chalet’s dog team. If you’re reading this before noon Friday, tune in to Northwind (am 860 in Inuvik) between 12 and 1 to hear sound from the Youth Centre’s “Mushkateers” expedition. More photos coming soon! http://www.cbc.ca/northwind/ This is the Northwind streaming site..check your timezones because it plays on Mountain Time.

Logos of the North, pt.II

feb08logo1.jpg feb08logo2.jpg Here are two logos, for a local Geophysics company and the Mackenzie Hotel. Both use circles and look very ‘northern.’  There is also a theme of cooperation, which is very well done.

From the CBC North vinyl archives

vinyl1.jpg vinyl-cover.jpg vinyl-sleeve.jpgHere’s a vinyl record from the CBC’s dusty old back room…an Inuit record called Uvagut: For our children’s future. Many CBC recordings have preserved the traditional language in song form. Here, the song titles are surprisingly melancholy. For example, the song “I am not sure I’ll be with my girlfriend forever.”Not all ‘traditional’ music is about caribou hunting!

Fuzzy fellows

ookpiksfeb08.jpgThese are Ookpiks! They are fur owls, which are available at craft fairs and the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation gift shop.

Colourful walk to work

b-pink-sky-feb-08.jpgb-pink-sky-2-feb08.jpgSunlight hours are getting longer each day. Here’s a view from around 8:30am.

Call of the Yukon

b-yukon-plate.jpgHere’s a close look at a Yukon plate. The NWT has its polar bear shape, while the Yukon celebrates Gold Rush history.

A foggy view of downtown

b-ice-fog-feb-08.jpg

When it gets cold, the ice fog nearly covers the streets here.

A very flaky post

b-flaky-paint.jpg

This building near Aurora College needs a new coat of paint.

Cooking sherry served on ice

b-sherry.jpg A familiar sight in Inuvik: A bottle of cooking sherry, which apparently has been finished with a little soda. Eeew.

Sunlight in the early evening

b-road-feb-22.jpg

A truck travels in the early evening, with headlights on.

There is now sunlight from about 9am to 7pm, and the temperatures have been uncannily warm, hovering around -8 degrees celcius. (And this is supposed to be the coldest month of the year!)

(Edit: this was incorrectly labelled this morning as a morning photo.)

We really need it

b-sunshine-record.jpg

Here’s a vinyl copy of Laid Back Sunshine Reggae: There is a stamp that says “please return to CBC Inuvik.”(Also, further irony, a track called Whitehorse.)

One foggy morning

b-layers-f08.jpg

Interesting layers of trees, as the ice fog rolls in.

I am becoming a morning person :(

b-blast-headphones.jpg Noisy people were playing country music again this morning.(Note the alarm clock says 4:33am!)I wish I could say the industrial earplugs and headphones worked. After being kept awake a few hours, I thought “well, might as well take a photo of myself trying to sleep…this will be funny in retrospect.” (Perhaps once I move to a quieter building?)

Green lights and ice fog

northern-lights-feb-08.jpg

Here are some northern lights, from the same session as the animation seen earlier. They really fill up the sky sometimes!

Follow the dotted line

animal-tracks.jpg More animal tracks around town. It’s fascinating to think that animals are out there, 24 hours a day, just keeping busy.

James Bond stuff at North Mart

b-snobikes.jpgThis is called a snow-bike. It’s like a snowmobile but slimmer, and it costs $6000.Has anyone seen these before? They are sold at the North-Mart here in Inuvik. Not sure if anyone will buy it, because people usually use their machines to haul cargo around here.

The view from Parkview apartments, pt.2

b-trees-feb-081.jpg

Here’s a peaceful scene, with the sun coming through some pine trees. It’s good to be back posting again!

“No idle threat?” or perhaps… “Canadian Idle?”

b-idling.jpg There is a new bylaw being proposed in town. It would limit car idling to 30 minutes or less.It turns out, some spectacularly wasteful people — with diesel trucks mostly — have just been letting their vehicles idle for hours at a time, right downtown. These cars were just keeping warm a couple minutes, between deliveries at the Roost.

You darn kids!!

b-boys-writing.jpgSo the other day I lent my camera around the Youth Centre hoping to generate some content for the Bomber Pages.Instead, the kids took photos of themselves vandalizing the centre.Great.

Northern lights (wiggling)

northern-lights.gifHere are some northern lights, moving in the sky around 9pm.

Walking the dog, Inuvik style

b-dog-walker.jpg

The pooch walks outside, while the owner slowly drives a car.

Late nights at The Roost

b-roost1.jpg Telephones are always ringing at The Roost restaurant, while guys like Joel, Mudie and Steve — above picture — make sure food orders arrive still hot. It’s a good place for pizza, burgers, chinese food and other late-night stuff.

Somebody call David Icke

b-freemasonhouse.jpgThis small house has a masonic compass on the front.

I got friends in low places

Here are the tables at the Mad Trapper bar.As you can see, everyone likes to leave a mark on the place!

Purple Haze (Guest views part 3)

purple-haze.jpg

Here’s a photo by Kendra Haines.

“It’s a sliver of sun coming back to Arctic Bay … and yes that is a hockey net on the ice.”

Very nice colours here!

Journey to the Happy Valley (Guest views part 2)

 winkler-sunset.jpg

Here’s a photo by Marc Winkler.

”This picture was taken from Happy Valley campground  in January, when
the sun was just starting to come back.”

Life on the trapline (Guest views part 1)

snowshoe.jpg

Here’s a spacious scene by Chris Harbord (pictured earlier at the CBC,) who recently went snowshoeing near the airport.
