Monthly Archives: September 2008

End of the season

It might be getting colder, but some people are still using their kayaks.

Muddy streets, part 2

Here is a view of downtown Inuvik, just outside the CBC office. (There are some stitching errors in the middle of the image.)

Muddy roads, take me home

It’s fall time, which means wet mud everywhere.

There is also snow falling in Inuvik, but it melts when it hits the earth.

After school in the Spacelab

The Youth Centre just got a absolutely amazing sound system and music editing suite.

Check out the photo gallery and hear the music at www.cbc.ca/northwind

Also, I put a slideshow on Youtube which features the radio piece and music combined.

Giant lego blocks

Another panoramic shot, showing the colourful True Value hardware store.

Rustic or run-down

The old Aurora College buildings could use a touch-up.

Art thieves? Vandals?

Someone tried to break the door of Northwern Images, at least two years ago.

The door is now reinforced with plywood, but the broken glass remains.

Selling ice in the arctic

Here’s a polar bear advertisement from the News Stand. He’s wearing a sweater!

Take a walk on the sewerline

Here’s more utilidors around town. There are so many, you rarely notice them.

Whales and ducks near the Lions Club

Here are some structures, from the park off Boot Lake.

It’s close to the picnic areas and the Lions Club building.

Symbolism of the Blanket Toss

I just found out how to make slideshows with sound.

Here is a clip of Governor General Michaelle Jean in April 2008, speaking about the symbolism of her participation in the “blanket toss” game alongside Inuvik’s Abel Tingmiak.

She really does into detail as to *why* it was important.

I am innocent, I tell you!

This dog was behind bars on Boot Lake Road.

“Dry towns” of the North

Email question: “Is Inuvik a dry town?”

Answer: While some communities such as Paulatuk, Tuktoyaktuk, Ulukhaktok and others have restrictions on alcohol (meaning you can’t fly in with more than a case of beer and a 40-oz bottle) Inuvik has no restrictions on alcohol purchases.

To use a pun, here’s “proof”: 75 percent alcohol for sale!

It should be noted, Tsiigehtchic is a dry town.

Barrels everywhere

These kinds of barrels are everywhere around Inuvik, in ditches and on roadsides.

A face from the past

Here is a detail from a mural in the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation building’s lobby.

Notice the traditional piercings which this man has on his lip.

Another face of the North

“Hi! I’m here to talk to you about fishing in the NWT.”

What Pokemon is this again?

The Northern Images store has some very nice signs.

The logo seems to be a pink owl or snowflake.

The dark night returns, part 5

That circle in the top left is not the moon, but a speck of dust!

Big wings over Inuvik

From John Denver’s song “Rocky Mountain High”

“He knows he’d be a poorer man if he’d never seen an eagle fly.”

Plenty of parking

You know what’s the best part of living in Inuvik?

No parking meters.

The dark night returns, part 4

Here’s the Mad Trapper bar, which has not regained some evening atmosphere.

It’s just not the same going to a bar in the daylight..

The dark night returns, part 3

Here’s the news stand keeping its late hours.

Two boys with one stone

Here’s another view from the Demolition Derby weekend.

Two boys throwing rocks, in the fall colours of the Delta.

The dark night returns, part 2

No explanation needed…it’s getting dark!

The dark night returns, part 1

The season is getting colder and Inuvik has longer nights. Here’s the view from Navy Road, with the Mackenzie River visible, around 11pm.

Hey, I saw a caribou…

…at the airport!

Ha ha ha

A mirror image

Here’s a blue building reflected in calm waters.

There was also a muskrat swimming around this pond, one time I visited without my camera.

Giant-size golf ball

Here’s the New North Networks dome in the fall leaves.

Dentist office in Inuvik

Here is the dentist office in town.

There are facilities here which serve the surrounding communities.

Take a walk where others ride

It won’t be long before snow falls on these snowmobile trails.

For the time being, they are lovely walking trails.

More colourful leaves

Photographed on the Boot Lake Trails

Lightning bowl

This is the dish that helps the CBC signal get to and from Inuvik.

It’s a big dish!

Loud fighter jet

Seen over the Mackenzie river and Boot Lake at 5pm.

Some kind of fighter jet, swooping low enough to buzz the cemetary.

What is going on?

Inuvik Demolition Derby: Check it on Youtube

Here’s a video-montage of the Demolition Derby.

Music by Inuvik’s own Dennis Allen, who just released his first album!

Last one out, please turn out the light

Tourists are few and far between these days.

Here is one of the last campers, looking at the sun setting on summer 2008.

Scenic evening views

Canada’s longest river, the Mackenzie

The creation derby

These two girls didn’t seem to care about the demolition derby on Aug. 31. They were busy planting  a tree branch in the soil, to make it appear like a living tree.

Historic photos at North Mart, part 2

This is another picture from the North Mart display, which shows a historic CBC vehicle. Notice the old records on the side!

From the glasses and tie of the man pictured, I would guess this would be the 1960s.

Seeking traditional knowledge: is this a bear?

Or did I just photograph the footprint of a dog?

I think it’s a dog.

Man of the Delta

This man was watching the Demolition Derby, sitting outside a cabin.

These types of structures are tucked away everywhere in the Delta, for people spending time “on the land.”
