Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff in Inuvik

Liberal Leader and potential future Prime Minister of Canada Michael Ignatieff visited Inuvik four weeks ago.

His visit was much less formal than Harper’s visit, but he spoke about northern issues with more detail, going into specific challenges such as delays on land claims negotiations and the Mackenzie Valley pipeline.

Inuvik Heritage Day fair: Many cultures here in the arctic

Inuvik recently held a Heritage Day. People from different cultures came to showcase their traditions.

These photos were featured on CBC North’s Facebook page. You can see Ethiopian dancing, the Filipino community and more.

Inuvik in the fall: quick, post these before the snow arrives!

(Note: I am far behind on posts, and I apologize!)

Here are some scenes from Invuik a few weeks ago, in early September.

The season is short but we get some of the nicest fall colours you’ll see anywhere.

Soundslide at CBC: New Mosque arrives in Inuvik

Inuvik’s newest place of worship has arrived. It’s a mosque, which was shipped up after years of fundraising by the Muslim community.

Here is the coverage on CBC North, which includes a soundslide.

Another cool bird on the side of the Dempster

Funky chicken, this one…

Can anyone tell me the species? Is it a grouse?

Muskrat on the side of the Dempster Highway

Here is a muskrat on the side of the Dempster Highway.

Probably trying to get away from town, before people start looking for new hats and mittens…

Wasting meat is a crime in the NWT

This sign was at the post office. If you’re going to kill a caribou, eat the whole thing or share with someone else..

New plates in the NWT: blue bear

Here are the newly-redesigned plates for the NWT.

Apparently, we needed more airbrush, and little bears inside the original bear…

Why change a classic design in the first place?

The new plates list the NWT’s motto of “spectacular.”

“Temporarily out of golf balls…ask the ravens!”

Inuvik has a driving range, with different animal markers on the greens.

The other day, it was closed because ravens had stolen all the balls!

(The birds think the round white shapes are eggs…and apparently it’s a big problem)

Fall colours 2010: Billy Moore fishing at Boot Lake

Here’s Billy Moore, fishing and enjoying the peace and quiet at Boot Lake.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper visits Inuvik

Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently visited Inuvik. It was his fifth tour of the arctic since being elected Federal leader.

Inuvik Drummers and Dancers

The Inuvik Drummers and Dancers are keeping very old traditions alive with their spirited drumming and dancing.

It’s always a good show when they perform.

They have been holding performances and practices since 1989 and they include three generations of dancers.

Houses around town

Here are some houses in Inuvik.

As you can see, there are many different styles.

Two large insects

Here are two bugs spotted in the wild.

Despite the permafrost and the cold temperatures, there is a thriving insect world in the arctic.

The Igloo Church

Here’s a look at the front of Inuvik’s Catholic Church, with woodwork, metal roof, etc.

Soaring eagle, of unknown species

Here’s an eagle soaring above Inuvik.

What type of bird has a white body and black wings?

Summer leftover: caribou in the trunk

Here’s a summer leftover, from a trip to Fort McPherson. A hunter returning to the community with a caribou in the cab of his truck.

Caribou is currently in a “yellow zone,” and some restrictions are enforced. However, the hunt for caribou remains a staple of people’s lives.

A visiting butterfly

Here is a delicate butterfly, which will probably face a long migration before the winter returns.

New mosque on the way

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/north/story/2010/08/31/manitoba-mosque-north-inuvik.html

Link of the day, a new mosque is coming to Inuvik!

The local Muslim community says it has about 80 members, and they have been fundraising for years.
